BAKU, Azerbaijan - Azerbaijani lawmaker Ceyhun Mammadov has called for legislation to protect national, spiritual and family values, warning that the country’s family institution could deteriorate further without additional safeguards.
Mammadov made the proposal during a Sept. 30 session of the Milli Majlis, Azerbaijan’s parliament, Vesti Baku reported.
He said rapid globalization was creating serious risks for national and spiritual values and voiced particular concern about family relationships. Mammadov said Azerbaijan’s family values were facing major threats and showed signs of decline.
The lawmaker argued that additional decisions and legislation were needed to counter those trends. If they continue at the same pace, he warned, the family institution in Azerbaijan could eventually break down completely.
Mammadov did not specify what measures the proposed law should contain and did not cite statistics or research supporting his assessment. His remarks amounted to a legislative proposal; no completed bill or adopted decision was announced.
Separate Azerbaijani media coverage of the parliamentary session also reported that Mammadov called for laws regulating artificial intelligence and social media, as well as updates to the country’s education legislation.
