Doctors in Azerbaijan have reported an increase in the number of children showing symptoms of viral infections, including nausea, vomiting, headaches, diarrhea, abdominal pain, weakness and high fever.
Pediatrician Ayten Ziyadova said enterovirus infections are currently among the most frequently diagnosed illnesses in children. Although such infections occur throughout the year, the number of patients with characteristic symptoms has recently increased.
Ziyadova advised parents to make sure sick children drink enough fluids. If vomiting continues and a child cannot keep liquids down, medical care should be sought immediately.
The greatest risk in such cases is dehydration, which can become dangerous to a child’s health. In severe cases, fluids may need to be administered intravenously at a medical facility.
Treatment should depend on the cause of the illness. The pediatrician emphasized that antibiotics do not work against viruses and should not be used without appropriate medical indications.
Parents were urged to monitor their children closely and avoid giving them medication without professional advice. Any medicines should be administered only as prescribed and supervised by a doctor.
