Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy called Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev on May 6, continuing the diplomatic follow-up after their recent meeting in Gabala.

According to Vesti Baku, Aliyev said in a post on X that the two leaders expressed satisfaction with the positive dynamics in relations between Azerbaijan and Ukraine. They also exchanged views on the implementation of issues discussed during the Gabala meeting as part of the bilateral agenda.

Zelenskyy’s office said the leaders discussed the implementation of steps agreed during the Ukrainian president’s visit to Azerbaijan at the end of April. The Ukrainian side also framed the call as part of continued work on strengthening Ukraine-Azerbaijan relations.

The phone call follows Zelenskyy’s talks with Aliyev in Gabala, where the two presidents met one-on-one and in an expanded format. According to the Ukrainian president’s office, the discussions there covered cooperation in security, energy and humanitarian support. Kyiv described that trip as Zelenskyy’s first visit to Azerbaijan and his seventh meeting with Aliyev in more than four years.

The latest call suggests that Baku and Kyiv are moving beyond diplomatic messaging and are now checking the implementation of previously discussed steps.

For Ukraine, Azerbaijan remains an important partner in the South Caucasus and along key regional routes. For Azerbaijan, continued dialogue with Kyiv fits into a broader foreign policy line built around regional balance, energy diplomacy and independent partnerships.
