Azerbaijan and Sri Lanka are considering trade, tourism and education as practical areas for expanding bilateral relations.

The agenda was discussed in Baku on October 14 during a meeting between President Ilham Aliyev and Sri Lanka’s minister of foreign affairs, foreign employment and tourism, Vijitha Herath, according to Vesti Baku.

The two sides exchanged views on ways to increase economic and trade cooperation and develop tourism links. They did not announce specific agreements, trade targets or launch dates for new projects.

Education was also discussed. Sri Lankan citizens are already studying in Azerbaijan, and the officials reviewed prospects for further cooperation in the field.

Herath thanked Azerbaijan for humanitarian assistance provided to Sri Lanka after recent natural disasters.

The officials cited cooperation at the United Nations, the Non-Aligned Movement and the Conference on Interaction and Confidence Building Measures in Asia, or CICA, as a political foundation for broader ties.

Herath traveled to Baku for the seventh CICA summit. Aliyev thanked Sri Lanka for supporting Azerbaijan’s chairmanship of the organization.

The details were independently confirmed by the official website of the president of Azerbaijan.
