Azerbaijani citizens can now complete passport control at Baku’s Heydar Aliyev International Airport in approximately 20 seconds using newly installed electronic gates.
The State Border Service has launched an automated system combining passport verification with biometric identification, Report said.
The service is currently available to Azerbaijani citizens aged 18 and older.
Passengers place their travel document on a reader, after which the system automatically checks the passport information against government databases. It then conducts facial biometric identification.
If the data and biometric information match, the electronic gate opens without the passenger having to complete the conventional inspection process at a staffed booth.
The gates are initially operating in the arrivals hall of Heydar Aliyev International Airport. Authorities plan to install similar systems at other border crossings.
The technology is expected to reduce waiting times, particularly when several international flights arrive within a short period. It should also ease the workload of border officers and limit the role of human error in routine document checks.
Passengers who do not meet the eligibility requirements or fail the automated biometric check will still be directed to a border officer for manual processing.
