The head of the Council of Europe Office in Baku, Petr Zich, was summoned to Azerbaijan’s Foreign Ministry over a recent ruling by the European Court of Human Rights.
According to the Foreign Ministry, Baku expressed a strong protest during the meeting over the ECHR ruling of June 18 in a case against Azerbaijan, describing the decision as unfair, biased and contrary to international law.
The ministry said the court’s wording contradicted Azerbaijan’s internationally recognized sovereignty and territorial integrity.
Baku also referred to the ECHR ruling in the case of “Chiragov and Others v. Armenia,” saying that the court had previously recognized the effective occupation of Azerbaijani territories by Armenia and the existence of the occupation regime with Yerevan’s direct military and financial support.
The Foreign Ministry objected to the use of the term “NKR” in the latest ruling as if it referred to an independent entity. It said such wording contradicts international law and court procedures.
Azerbaijan also protested phrases such as “the line of contact between Azerbaijan and the NKR,” as well as references to the army, authorities, prosecutor general and ombudsman of the defunct separatist regime.
Baku said these formulations amount to an attempt to legitimize the illegal separatist structure that once operated in Azerbaijan’s Karabakh region.
The ministry said Azerbaijan firmly rejects the ECHR ruling and will consider all possible steps to protect its lawful interests.
