The number of children born in Azerbaijan fell in the first five months of 2026 compared with the same period last year, according to new official data.
AZE.US reports, citing the State Statistics Committee, that 28,631 newborns were registered by district and city registration offices of the Ministry of Justice in January-May.
The birth rate per 1,000 people declined from 9.4 in the same period of 2025 to 8.5 this year.
According to the data, 53.6% of newborns were boys and 46.4% were girls.
During the same period, 980 twins and 39 triplets were also born in Azerbaijan.
The decline adds to growing concern over Azerbaijan’s demographic trend, as experts have repeatedly pointed to rising living costs, later marriages, migration and changing family priorities as factors affecting birth rates.
