BAKU, Azerbaijan - German companies are discussing two multimodal terminal projects at Azerbaijan’s Alat Port, with negotiations expected to conclude soon before the proposals can move toward implementation.
Nargiz Wick, executive director of the German-Azerbaijani Chamber of Commerce, AHK Azerbaijan, disclosed the projects, according to Vesti Baku.
She said German businesses view the Middle Corridor not only as an alternative transportation route between Asia and Europe, but also as a destination for direct investment in transport infrastructure.
Two Projects at Alat Port
Both proposals involve construction of multimodal terminals at Alat Port. Their cost, planned capacity and expected commissioning dates have not been disclosed.
Wick expressed hope that negotiations would be completed soon and that the sides could proceed to practical implementation. The projects remain under discussion and do not yet represent final investment decisions.
Alat Port is a key hub on the Middle Corridor, which connects China and Central Asia with the South Caucasus, Turkey and European markets. New terminals could expand capacity for transferring cargo among rail, road and maritime transport.
Investment Needs Clear Rules and Standards
The AHK Azerbaijan executive also said attracting private investors to transport and energy projects requires clear regulatory requirements and standards.
Public investment alone would not be sufficient to develop green energy corridors, she said, underscoring the need for conditions that allow private capital to participate.
