Azerbaijan’s State Security Service says it has thwarted a series of terrorist plots allegedly organized by individuals linked to Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, targeting key infrastructure and diplomatic sites in the country.

Azerbaijan’s State Security Service (SSS) said it had prevented a series of planned terrorist attacks allegedly organized by individuals connected to Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC).

According to the agency, counterintelligence operations uncovered a network involved in collecting intelligence and preparing acts of sabotage and assassination inside Azerbaijan.

Officials said the plots were aimed at creating panic among the population and damaging Azerbaijan’s international reputation.

Strategic targets identified

Investigators said several strategic and symbolic targets had been selected for potential attacks, including:

  • the Baku-Tbilisi-Ceyhan oil pipeline,

  • the Embassy of Israel in Azerbaijan,

  • a leader of the Mountain Jewish community,

  • the Ashkenazi synagogue in Baku.

Authorities say the plans involved the use of explosives and coordinated operations carried out by local collaborators.

Explosives discovered

During the investigation, security officers located multiple hidden containers containing explosives.

One of the containers reportedly held about 7.7 kilograms of C4 explosive material, typically used for demolishing reinforced structures.

Authorities also said remotely controlled explosive devices had been smuggled into the country.

One of the devices was believed to have a potential lethal impact radius of 250 to 300 meters, according to the investigation.

Alleged assassination plot

The investigation also uncovered preparations for an assassination attempt against a public figure in Azerbaijan.

Suspects were allegedly instructed to conduct surveillance, photograph locations and arrange weapons and transportation.

Authorities say one of the participants was promised 80,000 Azerbaijani manats in exchange for carrying out the attack.

Links to IRGC intelligence

According to investigators, the operation was coordinated by individuals linked to the IRGC’s intelligence structures.

Several Iranian citizens suspected of organizing or facilitating the plots have been placed on international wanted lists, Azerbaijani authorities said.

Sentences and arrests

A number of Azerbaijani citizens accused of participating in the operation have been convicted under various articles of the criminal code.

Some defendants received prison sentences of six years and six months, while others remain under investigation for weapons possession, terrorism-related offenses and participation in assassination planning.

Investigation continues

The State Security Service said investigative and operational measures are ongoing to identify other individuals involved in planning terrorist and intelligence activities against Azerbaijan.

Authorities have also urged the public to remain vigilant.
