Karabakh Offers 24,000 Hectares and 230-Hectare Greenhouse Zone to Agribusiness

More than 24,000 hectares of arable land in Azerbaijan’s Aghdam, Askeran and Khojaly districts have yet to be brought into production, while authorities are planning a 230-hectare zone for modern greenhouse farming.

The projects were presented on October 5 at the 100th Agribusiness Festival, according to Azerbaijani officials.

Emin Huseynov, the Azerbaijani president’s special representative in the Aghdam, Fuzuli and Khojavand districts, said the total stock of arable land in Aghdam, Askeran and Khojaly exceeds 50,000 hectares. He said entrepreneurs are being offered land, infrastructure and government support to launch agricultural projects.

Focus on High-Value Greenhouse Production

Agriculture Minister Majnun Mammadov said the proposed 230-hectare greenhouse zone would use intensive, modern production technology. The plan is to create a unified greenhouse cluster and later expand similar operations to other parts of the country.

Officials say the program is intended to increase production of higher-value agricultural goods and concentrate greenhouse development primarily in agro-industrial zones.

Aghdam Plans Population and Production Growth

Huseynov said Aghdam district’s population is expected to reach 21,000 by the end of 2026. More than 3,000 people currently live in Aghdam city, while the district’s population exceeds 8,000 when three villages are included.

The district once had more than 21,000 hectares of vineyards, accounting for about 28% of Azerbaijan’s total vineyard area. Authorities say they aim to restore Aghdam’s role as an economic center of Karabakh and East Zangezur.
