Markets in Azerbaijan are seeing increased activity ahead of the Nowruz holiday. Sellers say prices for most fruits and vegetables remain relatively stable, although some nuts and imported products have become more expensive.
With Nowruz approaching in about two weeks, markets across Azerbaijan are becoming busier as families prepare for the traditional holiday table.
Vendors say that, despite rising demand, prices for many products have not increased significantly yet. However, certain items – especially nuts and imported fruits – have shown noticeable changes.
One of the most visible increases has been in hazelnuts, a traditional ingredient in holiday sweets and snacks. Sellers say the price has risen sharply compared with last year. In some markets, hazelnuts that previously sold for around 14 manats per kilogram now reach about 28 manats, reflecting a significant increase.
The price of walnut kernels varies depending on quality, with market vendors offering them at roughly 8 to 15 manats per kilogram.
Prices for fruits and vegetables remain relatively stable, though some increases are being reported for imported produce.
For example:
-
Kiwis sell for about 4-5 manats per kilogram
-
Oranges cost roughly 3-4 manats per kilogram
Traders say products imported from Iran have become more expensive compared with previous months, reflecting higher wholesale costs.
Meanwhile, seasonal vegetables remain within typical ranges:
-
Tomatoes: about 4-4.5 manats per kilogram
-
Cucumbers: around 3-3.5 manats per kilogram
In addition to food items, markets have also started selling samani, the traditional green wheat sprouts used as a symbol of renewal during Nowruz celebrations. Prices typically range from 1 to 8 manats, depending on size and decoration.
Analysts note that prices may still fluctuate in the days leading up to Nowruz as demand increases and holiday shopping accelerates. In previous years, nut and dried fruit prices in Azerbaijan have shown mixed trends before the holiday, with imported products often playing a significant role in the market.
