UN Plans Strategic Dialogue With Azerbaijan on Karabakh

The United Nations plans to hold a strategic dialogue with the Azerbaijani government on Karabakh to identify the region’s needs and possible areas of UN support.

UN Resident Coordinator in Azerbaijan Dmitry Shlapachenko announced the planned talks, saying they would help clarify the government’s priorities and determine how the UN system could contribute to processes under way in the region.

The exact date and list of participants have not been announced.

Practical Support Has Not Yet Been Defined

Shlapachenko described Karabakh as a strategically important area of work. In addition to discussing possible support, the UN plans to consider expanding its activities in Azerbaijan and organizing cultural events.

The announcement signals a move toward direct discussion between the UN and the Azerbaijani government about the region’s practical needs. Specific programs, funding levels and implementation schedules have not yet been determined.
