Will Azerbaijan Restrict The Promotion Of Non-Traditional Relationships?

Azerbaijan is again facing a sensitive public question: could the country introduce restrictions on the promotion of non-traditional relationships, following a similar move in Belarus?

The discussion comes after Belarus adopted measures introducing administrative penalties for the public promotion of non-traditional relationships and gender transition-related topics. According to official reports, stricter liability applies when such content is directed at the public or at minors, with administrative arrest possible in certain cases.

Asked whether a similar decision could be adopted in Azerbaijan, Gunay Aghamali, a member of the Milli Majlis and chairwoman of the Ana Vatan Party, told Patrul.az that each country approaches such issues based on its own moral environment, legal system and social conditions.

She said Azerbaijan has historically been shaped around the institution of family, national traditions and moral values. According to Aghamali, this line remains one of the priority directions of state policy.

At the same time, she stressed that Azerbaijan is a state governed by law, and that any steps must be taken within the framework of the rule of law, citizens’ rights and freedoms, and the country’s international obligations.

Aghamali placed particular emphasis on the protection of minors. She said the state pays close attention to factors that may affect the psychological and moral development of children and teenagers.

The lawmaker did not say that Azerbaijan is preparing a specific ban, fines or administrative measures. Her comments instead suggested that the issue would be considered in the context of protecting minors, supporting family values and preserving the country’s national and moral framework.

She also said legal mechanisms alone are not enough in such sensitive matters. Public awareness, parental responsibility and more effective oversight in the digital environment, she argued, could play an important role.

According to Aghamali, the main goal is to preserve a healthy social environment, guide the younger generation in the right direction and ensure the continuity of national values. She added that decisions in this area should be based on both legal and social realities.
