Azerbaijani restaurants and wedding halls have been found serving artificial caviar to customers under the label of natural caviar, according to the country’s food safety authority.
Goshgar Tahmazli, chairman of the Azerbaijan Food Safety Agency, said in a joint interview with Trend and Xəzər TV that the falsification of alcoholic beverages remains one of the leading food safety and consumer protection problems in the country. He added that cases involving caviar are also detected frequently.
“In our restaurants and wedding halls, consumers are deceived when artificial caviar is served under the name of natural caviar,” Tahmazli said.
According to him, artificial caviar does not pose a health risk from a food safety standpoint. However, the issue is considered a serious violation of consumer rights, since customers are being misled about the product they are receiving.
Tahmazli said relevant measures are being taken against such violations.
