Nearly six in ten people aged 15 and older in Azerbaijan are either overweight or living with obesity, according to official statistics.
Only 40.4% of the population in this age group have a body mass index within the normal range. Another 48.2% are classified as overweight, while 10% are classified as obese. People who are underweight account for 1.4%.
Taken together, 58.2% of Azerbaijan’s population aged 15 and older are overweight or obese.
The figures show that weight-related problems become more common with age. Among people aged 45 to 64, 61.1% are overweight and 16.6% are obese.
Among residents aged 65 and older, 61% are overweight, while the obesity rate rises to 18.6%.
Men are more likely to be overweight, with a rate of 53.7%, compared with 43.2% among women. However, obesity is slightly more common among women, affecting 10.7%, compared with 9.3% of men.
The average weight of Azerbaijanis aged 15 and older is 69.7 kilograms, while the average height is 167.5 centimeters. Men weigh an average of 73.7 kilograms, compared with 66.1 kilograms for women.
