Changing attitudes toward marriage, family responsibilities and the traditional roles of men and women are becoming increasingly visible in Azerbaijan, as public discussion continues over why young people are less eager to marry and why some marriages end in divorce.

The imam of the Jeyranbatan Mosque, Ziyad Huseynov, offered his own explanation during an interview with the AMİN program on Baku.TV.

“Men want to be like their fathers, but women do not want to be like their mothers. This is a serious problem,” Huseynov said.

He argued that the stability of a family depends first and foremost on the relationship between the husband and wife.

“A child’s upbringing begins with a healthy marriage. And a healthy marriage begins with a healthy relationship between a man and a woman,” he said.

Huseynov did not place responsibility entirely on women, noting that men can also display aggression or emotional instability that damages family relationships.

The imam also addressed a broader question increasingly raised in discussions about marriage: whether modern people, focused on careers, personal freedom and individual comfort, are becoming less willing to accept the obligations that come with family life.

“Family is responsibility,” Huseynov said, arguing that the family remains one of the fundamental building blocks of society.

He also spoke in favor of higher education for women, saying that education shapes not only an individual woman’s outlook but can influence future generations and society as a whole.

“If you educate a man, one man is educated. If you educate a woman, society is educated,” he said.

Huseynov’s remarks reflect a wider debate in Azerbaijan over changing expectations surrounding marriage, gender roles and family life, particularly among younger generations.

The key remarks on women, marriage and family responsibility are supported directly by the interview transcript.
