Authorities in Azerbaijan have warned motorists against using devices that can temporarily conceal vehicle license plates from traffic cameras.
Some drivers are reportedly purchasing such mechanisms through social media in an attempt to avoid detection by stationary and mobile traffic enforcement systems.
Azerbaijan’s Main State Traffic Police Department said installing covers or devices that obscure a state registration plate is prohibited.
Drivers are also barred from deliberately covering a plate or making it difficult to read while passing surveillance cameras.
Under Article 342.9 of Azerbaijan’s Code of Administrative Offenses, violators face fines ranging from 500 to 800 manats, or approximately $294 to $471. The device used to conceal the license plate is also subject to confiscation.
Police stressed that altering or hiding a registration plate does not allow drivers to evade responsibility. Instead, the act constitutes a separate administrative offense.
Authorities said operations to identify vehicles with concealed or unreadable license plates are continuing and that offenders will be held accountable under the law.
