Azerbaijan’s five principles formed the basis of negotiations with Armenia after the 2020 war, Azerbaijani political analyst Ilgar Velizade said.
Velizade, who heads the South Caucasus Political Scientists Club, made the comments during an ATV broadcast.
Baku presented the principles in March 2022. They include mutual recognition of sovereignty and territorial integrity and were intended to provide a foundation for a peace agreement between the two countries.
Velizade said the Brussels negotiation format produced some results because it reflected changes in the region after the war.
He also criticized the European Union’s position, saying its approach was influenced by the interests of individual member states, particularly France.
At an October 2022 meeting in Prague, the leaders of Azerbaijan and Armenia confirmed their commitment to mutual recognition of sovereignty and territorial integrity. An official European Council statement said both sides recognized each other’s territorial integrity and sovereignty through their commitment to the U.N. Charter and the 1991 Alma-Ata Declaration.
