Bill Gates has warned that artificial intelligence could become powerful enough to help malicious actors cause a catastrophe in which as many as 1 billion people die.
The Microsoft co-founder described that outcome as a possible scenario, not a prediction, in an interview with NBC News.
Gates said the safety of increasingly capable AI systems should not be left solely to the companies developing them. He urged U.S. authorities to establish mandatory testing requirements and said lawmakers and law-enforcement agencies should take part in oversight.
His warning focused on the possibility that a bad actor could use AI as a tool to trigger an event with mass casualties. Gates did not say that such a death toll was expected or inevitable.
He argued that government-mandated safeguards and testing would not materially slow the industry’s development, while giving authorities a better chance to identify dangerous capabilities before they are misused.
The comments add to a broader debate over how governments should supervise advanced AI systems as companies release models with increasingly powerful reasoning, coding and scientific capabilities.
