Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev on May 21 received United Nations Deputy Secretary-General Amina Mohammed in Baku, as Azerbaijan continues to host the 13th session of the World Urban Forum.

Aliyev thanked the UN leadership for its support in organizing WUF13 and said the Azerbaijani government and the UN Human Settlements Program, UN-Habitat, had worked as one team to ensure the event’s success.

The president said WUF13 had become the second major global event hosted by Azerbaijan in terms of the number of participants after COP29. He said the forum, like COP29, had been successfully organized.

Aliyev also noted Azerbaijan’s effective cooperation with UN-Habitat and said the country would continue its partnership with the program and take an active part in future sessions of the World Urban Forum.

Mohammed conveyed greetings from UN Secretary-General António Guterres to the Azerbaijani president. Aliyev thanked her and asked that his greetings be passed on to Guterres.

The UN deputy secretary-general congratulated Aliyev on the successful hosting of WUF13. She said the participation of a large number of high-level guests from different countries had made a strong impression.

Mohammed also praised Baku’s urban development, saying the city combines modern planning with historical heritage. That balance, she said, gives the Azerbaijani capital a distinctive character.

The meeting also touched on Azerbaijan’s reconstruction and development work in territories liberated after the conflict. The sides said Azerbaijan’s post-conflict recovery experience could serve as an example for other regions facing similar challenges, and that sharing this experience within the UN framework would be useful.

They also recalled that Azerbaijan’s ASAN service model had received UN awards for public service and digital governance. The model was described as a successful practice already being applied in several countries in Africa and Asia.

The talks underlined the long-standing cooperation between Azerbaijan and the United Nations, with both sides noting Azerbaijan’s active role in the organization’s programs and initiatives, as well as its record of hosting major UN-related international events.
