Aliyev Says Trump’s Armenia Peace Role Merits Nobel Recognition

Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev said Donald Trump’s role in advancing the peace process between Azerbaijan and Armenia should be recognized as the Norwegian Nobel Committee prepares to announce the 2026 Nobel Peace Prize.

Aliyev made the statement in a post on X on Oct. 9, calling the U.S. president’s role at the Washington peace summit on Aug. 8, 2025, historic.

“We sincerely hope that President Trump’s historic efforts to secure lasting peace in our region will be duly recognized when the decision on this year’s Nobel Peace Prize is made,” Aliyev said.

The Azerbaijani leader said the Washington meeting marked an important step toward peace between Baku and Yerevan. He also said Azerbaijan and Armenia jointly nominated Trump for the prize at Baku’s initiative.

At the 2025 White House summit, Aliyev, Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan and Trump signed a joint declaration. Azerbaijan and Armenia also initialed the text of a peace agreement and backed the Trump Route for International Peace and Prosperity, or TRIPP, connectivity project.

The official summit transcript records both Aliyev and Pashinyan supporting Trump for the Nobel Peace Prize. The joint declaration credited Trump with significant contributions to advancing normalization between Azerbaijan and Armenia.

The Norwegian Nobel Committee is scheduled to announce the 2026 Peace Prize in Oslo on Friday, Oct. 9, at 11 a.m. Central European Summer Time, according to the Nobel Prize organization.
