Azerbaijan has won the European freestyle wrestling team title for the sixth time after a dominant performance at the European Championships in Tirana.
The Azerbaijani team finished the tournament with three gold, two silver and one bronze medal, collecting 152 points in the team standings. Georgia placed second, 58 points behind Azerbaijan, while Armenia finished third with 73 points.
The result confirmed Azerbaijan’s position as one of Europe’s leading freestyle wrestling nations. The national team had previously topped the continental standings in this discipline in 2009, 2017, 2022, 2023 and 2025.
The performance in Albania was also Azerbaijan’s strongest European Championship result in freestyle wrestling in 17 years by medal value. The haul of three golds, two silvers and one bronze was the country’s best since 2009.
Azerbaijan’s gold medals in Tirana were won by Islam Bazarqanov at 57 kg, Ali Tsokayev at 92 kg and Giorgi Meshvildishvili at 125 kg. Turan Bayramov took silver at 74 kg, Arseniy Djioyev won silver at 86 kg, and Jabrayil Hajiyev earned bronze at 79 kg.
The freestyle team’s victory followed Azerbaijan’s first-place finish in Greco-Roman wrestling. As in 2022 and 2025, Azerbaijan completed a “golden double” by winning the European team title in both Greco-Roman and freestyle wrestling.
