Azerbaijani grandmaster Aydin Suleymanli has scored a remarkable victory over Magnus Carlsen, the 16th world chess champion.

The game took place in Hong Kong as part of the World Rapid and Blitz Team Championship, Report said, citing the Azerbaijan Chess Federation.

Suleymanli’s win came as Azerbaijan’s Odlar Yurdu team defeated WR Chess, one of the main favorites of the tournament. The match ended 3.5:2.5 in favor of the Azerbaijani team.

WR Chess features some of the biggest names in world chess, including Magnus Carlsen, Fabiano Caruana, Wesley So, Maxime Vachier-Lagrave and other leading grandmasters.

Odlar Yurdu, whose roster is made up mostly of young Azerbaijani players, has 15 points and is currently in eighth place in the standings.
