Ukrainian strikes on targets near Moscow show that the war is increasingly no longer something Russians follow only on television, but something they can now see from their own windows.

Political analyst Ilham Ismayil made the remarks while commenting on whether Russia could resort to nuclear weapons as pressure grows on Moscow.

According to Ismayil, Russian officials and state propaganda have long tried to create the impression that the situation remains under control and that Ukraine has not taken the initiative. But repeated strikes on targets in and around Moscow, including attacks on oil refining infrastructure, suggest a different reality.

“Residents of Moscow and St. Petersburg are now watching the course of the war not only on television, but also from their windows,” Ismayil said.

He recalled that at the beginning of the full-scale war, Russian propaganda claimed the issue of Ukraine would be resolved quickly. Instead, Ismayil said, the war has reached a point where Ukraine is capable of striking areas that many inside Russia had long considered untouchable.

Speaking about the possibility of nuclear weapons being used, Ismayil said Moscow could theoretically try to refer to threats against Russian territory. However, in his view, even during the events in the Kursk region, when Russia had more formal grounds to speak about an incursion into its territory, the nuclear scenario was not carried out.

He stressed that Ukraine is not using nuclear weapons, but drones and advanced technological tools, constantly improving their effectiveness. Ismayil said Ukraine’s development of drones, IT capabilities and new methods of warfare has become one of the factors changing the situation both on the battlefield and inside Russia.

The analyst also pointed out that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has repeatedly proposed different formats for negotiations with Vladimir Putin, including meetings in European capitals, in France and even in Washington. According to Ismayil, Moscow effectively ignored those opportunities.

In his view, Ukraine will continue to respond to Russian attacks by targeting Russian territory.

“If you burn Ukraine, Moscow will burn too,” Ismayil said, describing the logic of Ukraine’s position.
