Azerbaijan’s population reached 10,273,450 as of July 1, 2026, but new official figures point to a significant slowdown in demographic growth.
The country’s population increased by 11,099 people, or 0.1%, during the first six months of the year, according to the State Statistical Committee.
During the same period in 2025, the population grew by 16,833 to 10,241,722. This means the first-half population increase was 5,734 smaller than a year earlier – a decline of approximately 34%.

The slowdown has coincided with a sharp decline in natural population growth.
Azerbaijan registered 34,056 births between January and May 2026, down from 38,836 during the same period last year. The number of births decreased by nearly 4,800, or approximately 12%.
Deaths, meanwhile, increased from 25,148 to 25,511. As a result, the natural population increase – the difference between births and deaths – fell from 13,688 to 8,545, a decline of nearly 38%.
The birth rate dropped from 9.2 to 8.0 per 1,000 residents, while the death rate edged up from 5.9 to 6.0, according to the State Statistical Committee’s demographic report.
Women account for 50.2% of Azerbaijan’s population, while men make up 49.8%. Based on those rounded shares, the country has approximately 5.16 million women and 5.12 million men – a difference of around 41,000.
About 54.3% of the population lives in urban areas, compared with 45.7% in rural communities. That corresponds to approximately 5.58 million urban residents and 4.70 million rural residents.
Azerbaijan’s population is still growing, but the demographic margin supporting that growth is narrowing. If the decline in births continues, the country’s natural population increase could fall further in the coming years.
