Unseasonable rain across Azerbaijan’s regions has affected vegetable supplies and pushed up prices at markets in Baku.
Potatoes are now selling for as much as 1.90 manats ($1.12) per kilogram, while green beans have risen by 20–30 gapiks.
As AZE.US reports, the latest prices were recorded at the 8th Kilometer Market in Baku’s Nizami district.
Vendors said unstable weather had complicated the harvesting and transportation of field-grown tomatoes, cucumbers and potatoes. Produce delivered from Azerbaijan’s regions has been particularly affected by the rain.
Current market prices include:
- Potatoes: up to 1.90 manats ($1.12) per kilogram
- Eggplants: 0.80–1 manat ($0.47-$0.59) per kilogram
- Tomatoes: about 0.80–1.50 manats ($0.47–$0.88) per kilogram, depending on quality
- Onions: 2 manats ($1.18) for three kilograms
- Melons: about 0.70 manat ($0.41) per kilogram
- Watermelons: 0.50-0.70 manat ($0.29-$0.41) per kilogram
- Fresh herbs: about 0.20 manat ($0.12) per bunch, with a wholesale price of 0.17 manat ($0.10)
Vendors said green beans had increased in price by around 20-30 gapiks per kilogram over the past week. Onion prices, however, remained largely unchanged.
Shoppers offered mixed assessments. Some complained that vegetables had become expensive, while others said prices remained affordable. Lower-quality tomatoes can still be found for around 0.80 manat per kilogram, while better produce sells for 1.30-1.50 manats.
Despite the weather-related increases, sellers said there had been no sharp overall rise compared with the same period last year. A more abundant harvest this season has helped contain prices.
