A taxi driver in Baku has been sentenced to nine months in prison after accumulating more than 10,000 manats in unpaid child support.

The case was heard by the Binagadi District Court, local media reported.

The man, identified under the fictitious name Jamil Gurbanov, was born in 1986 and married in 2009. The couple had a child in 2011 before divorcing in 2017.

Following the divorce, the court ordered him to pay 193 manats, or about $114, per month until the child reached adulthood. However, he failed to make the required payments, and the debt eventually rose to 10,016 manats, approximately $5,890.

His former wife filed a complaint with the court after being unable to recover the money.

During the hearing, the driver said he did not have the financial means to pay the outstanding amount.

The court sentenced him to nine months in prison. He was taken into custody in the courtroom.
