Overdue credit debts can create serious consequences for borrowers in Azerbaijan, including seizure of property and restrictions on leaving the country.

Banking specialist Emin Karimov told Demokrat.az that failure to meet credit obligations may lead to legal and financial measures against the debtor. According to him, one of the most common consequences is the seizure of property based on a court decision.

“In the first place, this includes the seizure of property and restrictions on leaving the country. In many cases, existing debts may also be taken into account when a person changes an identity card or other documents, and certain restrictions may be applied,” Karimov said.

He noted that if a borrower fails to repay a debt, creditors may seek compulsory enforcement. This can include claims against property owned by the debtor.

“For example, both movable and immovable property may be used to fulfill credit obligations. If a bank applies to court and a court decision is issued, the debt may be repaid at the expense of that property. In such a case, the person may lose the property,” the expert said.

Karimov added that travel restrictions may also be imposed when a person fails to meet debt obligations. Similar measures may apply to individuals with unpaid tax debts.

The expert said overdue loans do not affect only individual borrowers. Banks, non-bank credit organizations and pawnshops are part of the wider economic system. They attract funds, issue loans and generate income, which is then used to pay taxes, social contributions and salaries.

When loans are not repaid on time, the chain is disrupted. Banks may face financial difficulties or be forced to borrow additional funds. This can also affect state budget revenues and social payments.

Karimov urged citizens to treat financial obligations responsibly and repay debts on time in order to avoid legal problems and protect their property.

Overdue credit debt can therefore become more than a personal financial issue. It may lead to court proceedings, restrictions, loss of property and wider pressure on the financial system.
