Well-known Azerbaijani journalist Ganira Atash has shared the story of her son Farhad Anaroglu, who studies in the United States and hopes to become a neurosurgeon.
According to Atash, her son is a fourth-year medical-track student at the University of Virginia. He traveled to Azerbaijan to observe the work of prominent Azerbaijani neurosurgeon Alasgar Hasratov.
Atash said this was a standard international practice known as shadowing, where a student observes a doctor’s work without taking part in surgery, touching patients or making medical decisions.
However, she said the visit turned into an unpleasant situation. According to Atash, instead of supporting a young Azerbaijani who came from the U.S. to learn, some people inside the hospital created an artificial scandal and reported to TABIB that Farhad was allegedly performing surgery.
Atash called this a distortion of what happened. She stressed that being present in an operating room does not mean participating in an operation.
“Why should obstacles be created for an Azerbaijani student studying abroad who wants to return to his country and observe one of the strongest specialists in his field?” she wrote.
Atash said the case is not only about her son, but also about Azerbaijan’s attitude toward young people studying abroad who want to maintain ties with their country and gain professional experience at home.
