The presidents of Azerbaijan, Russia and Iran held trilateral talks in Turkmenistan on Oct. 9, with the North-South International Transport Corridor serving as the main topic.
Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev, Russian President Vladimir Putin and Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian began the meeting in Turkmenbashi following events connected with the CIS Council of Heads of State and the Caspian Environmental Summit.
The opening of the trilateral meeting and its main subject were reported by Trend. Detailed decisions had not been announced when the meeting began.
A Route Linking Russia, Azerbaijan and Iran
The North-South Corridor is intended to provide a durable freight connection through Russia, Azerbaijan and Iran, with access to the Persian Gulf and markets farther south. Its development requires coordination of rail, road, border and logistics infrastructure across all three countries.
Earlier on Oct. 9, Aliyev said transit cargo through Azerbaijan had increased 10% in the first half of 2026 to nearly 8 million tons. He set a medium-term target of 15 million tons for each of the North-South and East-West routes during a CIS leaders’ meeting.
