Proposed paid inspections and documentation requirements for sellers of homemade food could raise prices for jam, pickles and other preserves in Azerbaijan, economist Natig Jafarli has warned.
Jafarli said checks intended to protect consumers’ health should remain affordable for small producers instead of creating substantial new costs, according to Vesti Baku.
He said producers could ultimately pass the cost of permits, paperwork and inspections on to buyers, increasing the price of homemade goods sold at markets and through other small retail channels.
The potential effect would depend on the final rules and fees. Specific requirements and tariffs have not yet been approved, meaning a price increase remains a risk rather than an announced or confirmed decision.
Jafarli’s comments highlight the balance regulators face between food-safety oversight and keeping compliance costs manageable for small-scale producers.
