Azerbaijan has already accepted 30,000 vehicles for scrappage since last October, as the country continues its program to remove old and technically unusable cars from the roads.

The 30,000th vehicle was handed over at a scrappage facility in the Hokmali settlement of Absheron District. After being pressed, the vehicle will be sent for metal recycling.

An electronic portal has also been created to make the process easier for vehicle owners.

Under the program, owners of passenger cars in the M1 category, vehicles with up to eight passenger seats, are eligible for an incentive of 1,500 manats, or about $882.

For passenger vehicles with more than eight seats and a maximum permitted weight of up to 5 tons, the incentive is higher, at 2,000 manats, or about $1,176.

One important rule is that a vehicle submitted for scrappage is permanently removed from state registration.

The scrappage program is aimed at taking old and technically unfit vehicles out of circulation. Officials say this should help improve road safety and reduce harmful emissions.

Most of the vehicles submitted for scrappage so far were manufactured before 2000. Around 4,000 vehicles were produced after 2000.

Another 49 vehicles submitted under the program were manufactured within the past five years.

Participation in the vehicle scrappage program is voluntary.
