A Trans-Caspian fiber-optic cable linking Azerbaijan and Kazakhstan is expected to enter service in less than a month, Azerbaijan’s economy minister said.
Mikayil Jabbarov announced the timetable at the regional CAMCA forum in Baku. The new link is designed to create a high-capacity digital route between Europe and Asia across the Caspian Sea.
The project expands Azerbaijan’s role as a transit hub beyond freight transport and energy infrastructure to include international data traffic.
Support for Data Centers and AI
Jabbarov said modern regional connectivity depends on an integrated system of ports, railways, shipbuilding, pipelines, energy infrastructure and digital links. Baku’s investment in those sectors forms part of a long-term strategy to strengthen east-west connections.
He said the combination of competitively priced energy and high-speed networks could provide a foundation for data centers and artificial-intelligence infrastructure in Azerbaijan.
The Trans-Caspian line is viewed as the digital component of the Middle Corridor. Once operational, it is expected to provide another route for data moving between Central Asia, the South Caucasus and European networks, improving capacity and resilience along the wider corridor.
