KYIV - Ukraine used its domestically developed FP-7 tactical ballistic missile in combat for the first time, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said.
Zelenskyy announced the deployment on Oct. 1 but did not disclose the target, launch site or result of the strike, according to Vesti Baku and Reuters.
He said the next priority was production of the weapon.
What Is Known About the FP-7
Ukrainian military analysts describe the FP-7 as a short-range missile with a range of about 200 kilometers (125 miles) and compare its role with the U.S.-made ATACMS. Its developer, Fire Point, says it should be substantially cheaper.
The company also says the FP-7 is being developed as a ballistic interceptor under the European Freyja missile-defense program, launched in 2026 to pursue a lower-cost complement to systems such as the U.S. Patriot.
Fire Point is separately developing the FP-9, which it says will have a range of up to 850 kilometers. The company has said it aims to complete that project by the end of the year, but the timetable and performance claims have not been independently confirmed.
The first reported use highlights Kyiv’s effort to reduce reliance on imported long-range weapons. Ukraine has not disclosed production volumes or independently verifiable combat results for the FP-7.
