Fitr Zakat is one of the important religious duties performed by Muslims before the Eid al-Fitr holiday marking the end of Ramadan. The charitable contribution is meant to help those in need so they can also celebrate the holiday with dignity.

The donation is considered both a religious obligation and a social act of solidarity within Muslim communities.

Who should receive Fitr Zakat

According to theologian Tural Irfan, Fitr Zakat should primarily be given to people experiencing financial hardship.

Recipients may include:

  • low-income families

  • individuals facing financial difficulties

  • vulnerable members of society

  • relatives who are in need of support.

Helping relatives who are struggling financially is also considered a virtuous act in Islamic tradition.

Who is responsible for paying it

Traditionally, the head of the household pays Fitr Zakat on behalf of each family member.

At the same time, Islamic teachings emphasize that people who do not have sufficient financial means are not required to give the donation. In such cases, they themselves may receive assistance.

How Fitr Zakat can be given

Historically, Fitr Zakat was paid in food products such as:

  • wheat

  • barley

  • rice

  • dates.

In modern practice, it is also acceptable to provide the equivalent value in money.

Religious scholars say that with modern technology it is now possible to donate online or through digital payments as well.

Recommended amount

The amount of Fitr Zakat is traditionally calculated based on the cost of staple foods.

It is often estimated as the value of about three kilograms of grain products per person.

According to a recommendation issued by the Azerbaijan based Caucasus Muslim Board, the suggested amount in Azerbaijan is 10–15 manats per person.

When it should be given

Scholars recommend giving Fitr Zakat before the Eid al-Fitr prayer.

This ensures that people in need have the means to prepare for the holiday and celebrate it properly.

Beyond its religious significance, Fitr Zakat is also seen as a way to strengthen compassion, solidarity and mutual support within society.
