Smartphone users in Azerbaijan are increasingly facing a familiar problem: money quietly disappearing from their bank cards because of mobile apps, trial periods or digital subscriptions they may not fully remember approving.
In many cases, the user only notices the issue after repeated deductions. The payment description may show the name of an app store, a payment processor or a foreign platform, making it difficult to understand which service is actually taking the money.
Lawyer Rashad Aliyev told Demokrat.az that regular card deductions without the user’s clear consent can become a legal dispute.
Under consumer protection rules, service providers must clearly inform users in advance about the cost of a service, the subscription period and any automatic renewal. If the terms were unclear, hidden or presented in a confusing way, the user may have grounds to challenge the payment.
The first step is to contact the bank. A cardholder has the right to request information about which company or platform charged the account. The bank should provide that information and investigate the disputed transaction.
If the payment was made without the user’s proper consent, the customer may be able to start a chargeback procedure through the bank. This mechanism, used by international payment systems, can allow disputed funds to be returned in certain cases.
Aliyev said users should also contact the platform or app in writing, demand cancellation of the subscription and request a refund. It is important to keep screenshots, bank notifications, receipts and any correspondence with the company.
If there are signs that card details were used without permission, or if fraud is suspected, the matter should also be reported to law enforcement agencies. Such cases may involve cyber fraud or the illegal use of personal data.
From a practical standpoint, users should regularly check active subscriptions in App Store, Google Play and inside individual apps. Services that are no longer used should be cancelled immediately. Online payment limits, card security settings and transaction notifications should also be reviewed.
The key point is simple: if money is being taken from a bank card for a service the user did not clearly agree to, the payment can be challenged. The consumer can ask the bank to identify the company, cancel the subscription, seek a refund and, where necessary, involve law enforcement.
