A court in Baku reduced a claim by Azerbaijan’s state gas distributor, Azerigaz, from more than AZN 26,000 ($15,294) to AZN 1,659.80 ($976), according to a report by Baku TV.

Resident Ramil Mammadov said the large charge was imposed over the alleged unauthorized use of natural gas. He disputed the amount and demanded that the company produce photographs, video footage or other evidence explaining how it had calculated the debt.

“Let them show at least one photograph or video proving how they charged me AZN 26,000,” Mammadov said.

He said Azerigaz took the case to court after the payment was not made. Although the courts rejected most of the company’s demand, the original amount reportedly remained visible on the customer’s account.

Azerigaz said its formal lawsuit was filed against Zahra Ilham gizi Mammadova. The company sought AZN 26,000.86 ($15,295), including the alleged gas debt and a state fee.

The Khazar District Court issued its ruling on January 30, 2025. The Baku Court of Appeal later upheld the relevant decision on May 15, 2025.

Under the rulings, the consumer must pay Azerigaz AZN 1,659.80 ($976), along with an AZN 30 ($18) state fee.

The courts rejected the remaining AZN 23,773.56 ($13,984) demanded by the company.

Azerigaz said the rejected amount can be removed from the customer’s account after the court-ordered payment is completed and the consumer submits a formal application requesting the adjustment.
