Lamb prices in Azerbaijan now range from 20 to 26 manats ($11.80 to $15.30) per kilogram, with noticeable differences sometimes found even at the same meat counter.
Meat from larger lambs weighing 17 to 20 kilograms is generally sold for 20 to 21 manats ($11.80 to $12.35) per kilogram.
Smaller milk-fed lambs weighing around 10 to 12 kilograms cost between 23 and 25 manats ($13.50 to $14.70), while some retailers charge as much as 26 manats.
Sellers say prices depend on the animal’s weight and breed, as well as the wholesale purchase price. Milk-fed lambs are also considerably harder to find and are often brought in and slaughtered only after receiving an advance order.
Their meat is considered more tender and has a distinctive flavor, allowing sellers to charge a premium. However, rising prices have made milk-fed lamb unaffordable for many households.
“In the past, the amount we now pay for five kilograms of meat was enough to buy a whole live lamb. It has become very expensive,” one shopper said.
Azerbaijan has increased its meat imports in recent months, helping maintain overall supply. Lamb, however, continues to depend heavily on domestic production, meaning a further increase in prices cannot be ruled out.
