Azerbaijani cybercrime police have detained two men suspected of altering women’s photographs with artificial intelligence tools and demanding money to remove the images from social media.

The Interior Ministry said it had received complaints that unidentified individuals were taking photographs posted publicly by women, editing them with AI-based software and adding offensive or inappropriate content.

The manipulated images were then distributed through fake accounts on TikTok, Instagram and Telegram. The suspects allegedly contacted the victims afterward and demanded payments in exchange for deleting the posts.

Cybercrime investigators identified the suspects as 31-year-old Loghman Javizade and 20-year-old Elvin Mammadov.

According to the ministry, the men collected women’s photographs from social media, digitally altered them and added insulting material before publishing the images through fraudulent profiles.

A criminal case has been opened, and both suspects have been charged. The investigation remains ongoing.

The Interior Ministry warned that photographs and videos shared online can be altered or manipulated and used for illegal purposes as artificial intelligence technology becomes more widely available.

Authorities advised users not to share private photos or videos with strangers and to avoid responding to suspicious messages, offers or demands for money.
