Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev met with former Ukrainian President Viktor Yushchenko in Baku, where he was formally presented with a certificate naming him an honorary citizen of the Ukrainian city of Irpin.
During the meeting, Aliyev and Yushchenko recalled their relationship spanning more than 20 years and the joint efforts they had made to strengthen ties between Azerbaijan and Ukraine. They also exchanged views on the future of bilateral relations.
Ukraine’s Ambassador to Azerbaijan Yuriy Husyev presented the honorary citizenship certificate to Aliyev during the meeting.
The Irpin City Council approved the decision to confer the title on the Azerbaijani president on April 30, 2026. The award recognizes Azerbaijan’s support for Ukraine and its contribution to rebuilding Irpin’s damaged social infrastructure.
Husyev described the honor as a symbol of the strong partnership, solidarity and friendship between Azerbaijan and Ukraine.
The ambassador also thanked Aliyev and the Azerbaijani people for standing with Ukraine and providing concrete assistance in the country’s recovery.
According to Husyev, Azerbaijan has become one of Irpin’s key reconstruction partners. With Azerbaijani support, the city’s Linguist Humanitarian Lyceum and a diagnostic and outpatient medical center have been restored. The projects received more than 120 million Ukrainian hryvnias in funding.
Irpin, located near Kyiv, suffered extensive destruction during fighting in the early stages of Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine.
Husyev said granting Aliyev honorary citizenship of Irpin reflected the Azerbaijani president’s personal contribution, as well as the broader support provided by the people of Azerbaijan to the Ukrainian city.
