European governments are misleading the public about the nature of their military support for Ukraine, Azerbaijani Honored Journalist Elchin Alioglu said during an appearance on the Musavat TV YouTube channel.
According to Alioglu, Western political and media circles often portray weapons supplied to Kyiv as aid funded directly by European taxpayers.
In reality, he argued, much of that support is provided through loans and other financial arrangements that Ukraine will eventually have to repay.
The journalist said growing frustration over the war has strengthened political forces such as the Alternative for Germany, or AfD, which argues that continued support for Ukraine does not serve the interests of German citizens. Similar arguments, he added, are increasingly being heard in Belgium, Britain and the United States.
However, Alioglu warned that abandoning Ukraine would carry far greater risks for Europe.
“Russia’s war machine is being stopped in Ukraine,” he said. “If it is not stopped there, the same threat could reach Eastern Europe, the Baltic states and Moldova.”
He described Belarus as a country that has already surrendered much of its political independence to Moscow.
Alıoğlu also challenged European leaders’ claims that their countries are simply providing weapons to Ukraine. He maintained that arms are often supplied on credit, potentially leaving Kyiv with years of financial obligations.
“Ukraine will have to repay the cost of these weapons with interest,” he said. “To service those debts, it may be forced to borrow again from international financial institutions.”
According to the journalist, the more immediate problem is that Ukraine is still not receiving enough weapons, regardless of the financial terms.
“Ukrainians are prepared to accept even these conditions, but the weapons are not arriving in sufficient quantities,” Alioglu said. “Different countries offer different explanations, while Ukrainians continue to die on the battlefield.”
He described the military situation as increasingly critical, pointing to Russia’s use of attack drones and tactical ballistic missiles. Moscow, he said, is continuing to replenish its arsenal while Ukraine faces shortages and delays in Western deliveries.
Alioglu argued that European voters should view support for Ukraine not as charity but as an investment in their own security.
“The fate of Europe is being decided in Ukraine,” he concluded.
