Azerbaijan Railways plans to launch passenger routes to Khankendi, Yalama, Minjivan and Astara as it expands its interregional fleet, the company said.

The state railway operator has ordered four new interregional electric trains from China’s CRRC Zhuzhou Locomotive. Each seven-car train will have 434 seats across first, business and standard classes.

The trains will have a maximum operating speed of 140 kilometers per hour and a design speed of 160 kilometers per hour. All four are due to be delivered within two years.

Passenger services to Yalama, Minjivan and Astara are expected to resume in stages by 2030. Azerbaijan Railways also plans a separate Baku-Khankendi service.

The company said it is also discussing the acquisition of 20 passenger trains and 50 sleeper cars. Azerbaijan received seven freight locomotives from China in September, and 14 more are planned in the next phase.
