Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev has been awarded the Guernica Prize for Peace and Reconciliation for his efforts toward achieving peace between Azerbaijan and Armenia and promoting dialogue.

In a message to participants of the award ceremony, Aliyev thanked the city councils of Guernica-Lumo and Pforzheim, the Guernica Peace Museum, the House of Culture and the Gernika Gogoratuz Peace Research Center.

Aliyev said receiving the award was a great honor, noting that it is intended to preserve the historical memory of the Guernica tragedy and recognize those who contribute to peace and reconciliation.

He also said the presentation of the prize on April 26, the day of remembrance for the victims of Guernica, gave the ceremony special symbolic meaning.

The award comes as Azerbaijan and Armenia continue efforts to move toward a peace agreement after decades of conflict, with Baku presenting the process as a central part of the region’s postwar political agenda.
