A rare Mercedes-Benz produced in 1938 has been put up for sale in Azerbaijan for 650,000 manats (about $382,000), a price more commonly associated with luxury real estate than a vintage car.
The vehicle, a Mercedes-Benz 170 V W136, is currently kept in Sumgayit. Its owner, Teymur Mammadov, says it is the only car of its kind in Azerbaijan.
The car is nearly 88 years old, but Mammadov says it remains in good technical and visual condition. According to him, the vehicle arrived in Azerbaijan in the 1970s and later came into his possession through a friend.
Mammadov said he has owned the car for 10 to 12 years and has spent more than 100,000 manats (about $59,000) on restoration work.
He says the high asking price reflects the car’s condition, rarity and the absence of similar models on the local market.
The vintage Mercedes has also become something of a public attraction. People often stop to take photos with it, while public figures and artists have used the vehicle in music videos, photo shoots and other productions.
Mammadov said the car brings him some income, but he has still decided to sell it. According to him, a potential buyer showed interest last year, but the deal collapsed at the final stage because of a misunderstanding.
For now, the car remains on the market. The question is whether Azerbaijan has a buyer willing to pay 650,000 manats for a restored pre-war Mercedes, even one its owner describes as unique in the country.
