Russian missile and drone strikes killed three people, including a child, and injured seven others in Kyiv and the surrounding region early Wednesday, Ukrainian officials said.
Poland and Romania scrambled military aircraft during the attack to protect their airspace. Both countries are members of NATO and the European Union.
The Kyiv City Military Administration said two people were killed and four injured in the capital. Mayor Vitali Klitschko reported fires affecting private homes, a store and a warehouse.
Kyiv regional governor Tymur Tkachenko said a missile and drone strike outside the capital killed a child and injured three other people. Infrastructure facilities, homes, warehouses and vehicles were also damaged, he said.
Ukraine Also Targets Russia’s Samara Region
In Russia, Samara regional governor Vyacheslav Fedorishchev said Ukrainian drones damaged private homes. Samara, about 1,100 kilometers (684 miles) southeast of Moscow by road, is a major center for oil production and refining.
Reuters reported that it could not independently verify the claims made by either side.
The attack followed a period of increasingly frequent strikes on the Ukrainian capital. Russia has been using ballistic missiles and faster jet-powered drones, while Ukraine has sought additional air-defense systems and accelerated work on interceptor drones.
Russia’s Defense Ministry later said its overnight operation struck a communications center in Kyiv, energy facilities in the Kyiv region that it said supported military production, and port infrastructure in Izmail. Ukraine has repeatedly accused Russia of hitting civilian areas during its attacks.
