The birth of a child can place significant pressure on a couple’s relationship, as sleep deprivation, exhaustion, new responsibilities and major lifestyle changes increase the risk of tension at home.
Azerbaijani psychologist Aytan Alakbarova told Demokrat.az that pregnancy and childbirth may leave women struggling with anxiety, emotional exhaustion and other psychological difficulties, AZE.US reports.
According to Alakbarova, particular attention should be paid to a mother’s emotional well-being during the first 40 days after childbirth and, in some cases, for as long as six months.
Anxiety can begin well before delivery. Expectant mothers may worry about their own health, medical test results and whether their baby will be born healthy. Disturbing stories about pregnancy and childbirth shared on social media can intensify those fears.
The accumulated stress does not necessarily disappear once the child is born. Instead, it may be compounded by physical recovery, disrupted sleep and the demands of caring for a newborn.
Tensions can escalate when a husband or other relatives fail to understand the mother’s condition. Comments such as “I have to work in the morning, stop the baby from crying” can deepen her sense of isolation and trigger arguments between spouses.
Alakbarova said both parents should prepare psychologically for the arrival of a child. Fathers, in particular, need to understand the physical and emotional challenges their partners may face and take an active role in caring for the baby.
Mutual understanding, shared responsibilities and timely psychological support can help couples reduce conflict and protect their relationship during one of the most demanding periods of family life.
