Experts Explain Why Debt Can Remain When Closing a Loan

A monthly loan payment does not reduce the principal by the full amount paid because part of it covers interest and, depending on the contract, fees and other costs, financial specialists said in an Azerbaijani television report.

The specialists, speaking in an ATV “Xəbərin Olsun” segment summarized by Vesti Baku, said borrowers often focus on how much money a bank will provide and sign documents without fully examining the loan’s total cost or repayment schedule.

A payment of 100 manats, for example, does not mean the principal falls by 100 manats. One portion repays the principal and another covers interest, with the precise breakdown shown in the payment schedule.

The total amount repaid on a 1,000-manat loan depends on the interest rate, term and contractual conditions. The original loan amount alone does not show how much the borrower will ultimately pay.

Early Repayment

To close a loan ahead of schedule, a borrower generally must pay both the outstanding principal and interest accrued through the actual payoff date, the report said. Transferring only the remaining principal may therefore be insufficient if interest has accumulated since the previous payment.

The specialists said interest for future months should not be charged after a loan has been fully repaid early. Any additional charges and the exact closing procedure, however, should be checked against the borrower’s individual contract.

Questions to Ask Before Signing

Borrowers should establish how much cash they will receive, the total amount they will repay, how each monthly payment is divided and what penalties or other consequences apply after a missed payment. They should also ask how a full early-repayment amount will be calculated for a specific date because the principal balance and total amount due may differ.

A loan agreement sets obligations for both the bank and the customer. Borrowers retain their legal rights after signing and should seek explanations of any unclear terms before taking the loan, the report said.
