A European Commission delegation and a representative of the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development discussed transport corridors, energy projects and potential financing mechanisms in Azerbaijan’s Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic, according to Vestibaku.
Jeyhun Jalilov, the Azerbaijani president’s plenipotentiary representative in Nakhchivan, received the delegation on Sept. 29. The group was led by Adrien Kiraly, the European Commission’s director for the Eastern Neighbourhood and Türkiye.
The talks covered Nakhchivan’s role in the East-West and North-South transport routes. Azerbaijani officials presented the Trump Route for International Peace and Prosperity, or TRIPP, and plans for a land connection between Nakhchivan and the rest of Azerbaijan.
The sides also discussed a planned railway linking Nakhchivan with Türkiye and the possibility that an Azerbaijan-Armenia peace agreement could open additional regional transport routes.
Azerbaijani officials presented the Tivi and Ordubad hydropower projects and plans to connect Nakhchivan’s energy potential to the Jabrayil energy hub. Electricity could then be exported to Türkiye and other markets.
Elisabetta Falcetti, the EBRD’s managing director for Türkiye and the Caucasus, discussed possible support instruments, including concessional lending. No project-specific financing decisions were announced.
Kiraly said the meeting also reviewed the economic parameters of initiatives the European Commission plans to pursue in the coming years.
