Azerbaijan is considering legislation that would allow traffic cameras to automatically record drivers who use handheld mobile phones while their vehicles are moving.
The proposal was discussed by parliament’s Committee on Legal Policy and State-Building. It would add the offense to the list of traffic violations that may be documented through special photo and video systems.
Current law provides a fine of 50 manats for using a handheld phone while driving. The bill would not create a new ban or increase the penalty; it would change how the violation can be detected and documented.
The same camera-based procedure has been proposed for illegal advertising on vehicles, an offense that also carries a 50-manat fine for individuals.
The proposal has not yet become law.
