Azerbaijani Lawmaker Urges EU Support for TRIPP and Demining

BRUSSELS - Azerbaijani lawmaker Gaya Mammadov urged the European Union to move beyond political statements and provide practical support for the Trump Route for International Peace and Prosperity, or TRIPP, as well as mine clearance and reconstruction in territories retaken by Azerbaijan.

Mammadov made the appeal at the “Azerbaijan and the European Union: New Prospects” forum in Brussels, according to the original Vesti Baku report. The event was organized by Azerbaijan’s Center of Analysis of International Relations and the Royal Institute for International Relations. Azerbaijan’s parliament had announced Mammadov’s visit to the Oct. 26 forum.

He said the transport project should not be delayed, arguing that new links could create economic opportunities and help build trust between Azerbaijan and Armenia. An EU policy document describes TRIPP as a route envisioned in the Aug. 8, 2025, Washington declaration that would provide unimpeded connectivity between mainland Azerbaijan and its Nakhchivan exclave while expanding the capacity of the wider Trans-Caspian corridor.

Call for Support on Mine Clearance and Reconstruction

Mammadov also called for broad European assistance with demining, reconstruction and the return of displaced people. He said about 4,000 Azerbaijanis remain missing and that mines have injured or killed more than 400 people since the 2020 war.

He said the EU could help determine the fate of missing people and expand its backing for humanitarian work. The European Commission says the EU and its member states have committed €23 million to mine action in Azerbaijan, making the bloc the country’s largest international donor in that field.

Mammadov acknowledged that the EU has limited ability to influence regional security directly, but said it could have a tangible impact through investment, technology, energy cooperation and transport links.

The comments reflected the Azerbaijani lawmaker’s position. No new EU commitment or timetable for support was announced at the forum.
